National Public Radio is one of the best sources of unbiased news in the world. They run a news program every morning called “Morning Edition”. They run a news program every night called “All Things Considered.” Each is 90 minutes in length. Each covers the issues of the day in interviews and vignette story form. It is a great way to learn. The following two podcasts are from Monday 10/27 “All Things Considered.” Listen to each and answer the following questions.
Obama Makes Closing Arguments in Ohio – podcast (3:53)
In Ohio McCain Warns Against One- Party Rule – podcast (3:09)
On these podcasts each candidate is campaigning in Ohio. Both are providing closing arguments to their campaigns. Listen to each podcast and do the following:
1 – First take Obama – if you were at his rally – what issues does he emphasize? What things does he want you to leave that rally believing? And finally what impresses you about the sound of his message – the presentation of it all?
2 – Next take McCain – if you were at his rally – what issues does he emphasize? What things does he want you to leave that rally believing? And finally what impresses you about the sound of his message – the presentation of it all?
3 – One last thing – in the two podcasts together – what had the biggest impression on you? Was it the speaking styles of the two men, the message that they conveyed, the broadcasters thoughts on the podcast? Tell me why.
When posting your answers label your first answer “Obama.” Skip a line. Label your second answer “McCain.” Skip a line. Label your third answer “Biggest Impression.”
Candidates Obama and McCain are both campaigning in Ohio this week. McCain and Obama are both having closing arguments. Meaning they are not starting any new topics, they are just focusing on the key points of their campaign.
Obama is mainly focusing on the states that were republican the past few elections to try hard to win. He has been in Ohio, he’s going to Pennsylvania and Florida this week, which are usually republican states. The issue I thought Obama emphasized the most was “It’s time to end the era of George W. Bush and end the era of too much deregulation and greed.” In the past few weeks Obama had been talking about how we need to start preparing Americans for the sacrifices they are going to have to face once a new president takes over. Obama claims that we won’t only change the country but he will change the world. The thing that impresses me the most is the last part of him speech when he says “In one week we will chose hope over fear and unity over division, the promise of change. Just if everyone comes together as one nation and win this election.”
McCain emphasizes the issue on how this election comes down to how you want your hardern money spent. He also states there will be the spur of the job growth which should begin and end with tax cuts. McCain also thinks we should use that $700,000,000 and go buy mortgages directly from home owners to try to limit foreclosures. McCain didn’t really impress me too much, it seems like all he talks about is taxes taxes taxes. John McCain thinks Pennsylvania, a state that was democratic two years ago, will turn republican because in central and western Pennsylvania where Sara Palin has been popular.
After listening to the two podcasts, Obama is the one that impresses me the most. I don’t really agree with McCain anyways, but this last speech in Ohio it seemed like he didn’t offer too much like Obama. Obama talked about ending the war, ending the era of George Bush and ending deregulation and greed. The ending of Obama’s speech was the most influencing, when he talked about how he will change the world for all of us.
