Mr. Wood’s Example – Five Photos.
#1 “Hear my Voice; Count my Vote!” Hong Kong (229 words)
Four years ago the umbrella revolution swept Hong Kong. My Senior Current Issues class that year accessed an app that allowed us in real time to talk with protesters on the streets. There’s a thirteen hour time difference between us and Hong Kong; 9:00 AM class time was 10:00 PM street time in Hong Kong. We texted with protestors. At first they were bad mouthing us. The people that we talked with said that Americans didn’t care, didn’t know, were stupid. Eventually we found students who were impressed that we had found them, and we were only high school kids. It was fascinating. Hong Kong is like a city and a state, kind of a territory, Officially it is a semi-autonomous district of China. It is highly educated. It is a financial hub and vital to the Chinese Economy. But it is an enigma…its history is not in tune with the mainland. And it seeks and has sought self rule since its handover from UK to Chinese sovereignty in 1997. Since then, particularly lately, young people have pushed hard for autonomy. China is governed by an autocratic regime that severely restricts self rule…hence the conflict. 2019 has been a tumultuous run between those who want self rule and the Chinese mainland appointed government. As of January 1, 2020, Hong Kong has a population of seven million people.
