Civil Rights Movement – Warming Up – A First Person Perspective

This assignment is worth 100 points and is due next week.  Make sure you do a good job, it will provide the bulk of your homework grade for Marking Period #1.
  • Go here for a PDF copy of the Assignment directions.
  • Go here for a PDF copy to Part One – Foot Soldiers.
  • Go here for a PDF copy to Part Two – Leaders.

One of the advantages of living in the United States is that you have so many unalienable rights.  One of our challenges is that we don’t know that.  Neither do we appreciate the advantage of availability of those rights.  If you know the history of the Civil Rights movement, you will recognize not only your rights under the Constitution, you will also know what it is like for people to stripped of those liberties merely because of the color of their skin.  And if you study the Civil Rights movement in the United States history you will know the sacrifice that people have made in this country to reaffirm those liberties, whatever the cost.

First though you need to get back in the groove.  This assignment will take you there.   On Assignment directions sheet, I’ve noted a Timeline of Events and Leaders of the Movement.  You are to choose two events and two Leaders for your concentration of study..  The choice is up to you…circle the four on this paper and proceed to research them in the following pages.  For Part 1 Foot Soldiers your insight is from no particular perspective – just a random person.  For Part II The Leaders of the movement that perspective is from your chosen individual.

You may use the forms that I have provided you for this assignment…or you can choose to type it (google docs or not) and hand it in that way.  Your call.  We will be in the computer lab for at least three days…use your time wisely.

Senior Exams – Government, Economics, and Senior Current Issues

OK…guys.  Wipe the drool from your mouth, get your head off the desk,  and please read the following.  Below I have noted exactly what you can expect for exams in all three courses.  Please take a good long look and email me at bobwoodmsu@gmail.com if you have questions.  Believe it or not, high school graduation will not be the highlight of your life.  As for tomorrow,  I will be sobbing right along with you all.  OMG it is soooooooo sad.

Blow your nose, wipe the tears, and just get out there and change the world!

1 – Senior Current Issues – OK, you know what our Final is.  We did the Circle Study essay exam on the African Digging Deeper Assignments.  Everybody should be good on this.  I will post the scores on Saturday, as they also count as a Common Assessment.  If you must take the Final you must be in my classroom on Tuesday – school rules, not mine.  So I’ll see you then and there.  Stay tuned for final grades on MP #6 by Saturday night.

Thursday June 13.  Check the blog – keep in touch.  And let’s go.

As for Lou’s – we’ve got five 100% scores.  Almanda (the Danish Pirate), Sierra (the fetal postioned GVSU freshman), Sara (teacher / pharmacist / teacher / pharmacist/ social worker / pharmacist / astronaut..) Emily (Dr. Dolittle) and Little Weaver.  We need to set a date.  Dinner’s on me…I will invite Papa.  Anybody that wants to come pays their own way…although for reasons to be named later I will buy Blair’s Tea.  And the OHS School Board is not invited.  Let’s go the week of June 3 thru 7.

2 – Government – What do we have to do….You have two assignments that officially are due for you on Friday.  I am allowing you to turn them in on the day of your exam.  That would be Wednesday.

  • Assignment #1 is the Interpretation of the Declaration of Independence.  I will stay after school on Thursday, Friday, and Tuesday for anybody who would like help.  For those of you who would like to join us, Francis and I will be working diligently on Mr. Jefferson’s prose each day.  MP#6 – 50 point assignment.
  • Assignment #2 – you must recite the Declaration of Independence. MP#6 – 50 point assignment.
  • The two assignments count 50 points to MP #6 and each count 50% of your Exam grade.  Please go to here for links to podcasts that breakdown each portion of the Declaration.  If you only listened to these podcasts you could finish the Working Definition of the Declaration in an hour or two.  Either way the link is there for your use.
  • You may turn in the assignment and do your memorization for me on either Tuesday or Wednesday.

3 – Economics – Two take home assignments.  Women’s Crusade and Africa’s Girl Power.

  • Women’s Crusade – This is a 50 point MP #6 assignment, and also serves as 50% of your Final Exam.  You may choose to turn the paper in on Friday, or you can come in on Tuesday or Wednesday, whichever day you take the exam and hand it in there.
  • Africa’s Girl Power  – Go here for specific guidelines and links.  50% of the Final Exam.
  • You may turn in the assignments on either Tuesday or Wednesday.

That’s the Agenda – If you gotta question drop me an email or call at 616-402-8668.  And stay tuned to the blog for further updates.

The Bank on Students Loan Fairness Act

Go here to sign the petition.  Read it first and then call your representative and tell him to support The Bank on Students Loan Fairness Act.  This is all about YOU!  About Education.  About the youth of America.  So soak some torches, sharpen Angry_Mobsome pitchforks and head to the phones.

One more thing…the Federal Government is going to make $51 billion dollars off of student loan payments this year.  LOOK!  That is obscene.  Do something about it!  Call Congress.  Sign the petition.  WAKE UP!

The interest rate on federal subsidized Stafford student loans is set to increase from 3.4% to 6.8% on July 1st. If Congress doesn’t act soon, millions of college students will see their student loan payments jump.

Some argue that it’s too expensive to keep government loans at low interest rates, but the federal government makes low interest loans all the time – just not to everyone. Big banks can borrow money through the Federal Reserve discount window at a rate of about 0.75%.

The biggest banks in the country – the ones that wrecked our economy and cost millions of Americans their jobs – pay next to nothing on their debt, while students pay nine times as much, and that’s why so many of them try to get compensation instead, with the help of lawyers from sites as https://danielhegwer.com/.

The Bank on Students Loan Fairness Act lets students take advantage of the same low rates offered to banks for one year while Congress finds a fair, long-term solution on student loans interest rates.

Unlike the big banks, students don’t have armies of lobbyists and lawyers that are necessary for division of assets and there are resources at sites like sariehlawoffices.com/division-of-assets/ that help with this. But they do have us. Let’s do what’s right and bank on students.

Win a free Ticket to Girl Rising – or purchase your own for $10

Girl Rising will be playing at Cinema Carousel in Muskegon at 7:30 PM on Thursday, May 9.   Go here for more information.

Interstitial_AboutGR2

Here’s what we are going to do.  I can’t go to the movie because I’ll be in Washington D.C. with Close Up.  But I’m going to try to help you work through the ticketing process…its a bit complicated.  Girl Rising is not a regularly scheduled movie.  It’s a one time deal – private showing – in which you must purchase tickets online.  That can be a real problem if you do not have a VISA card.  So first talk to your mom and your dad, aunts or uncles, or granny and see if they would like to go with you – and if they can purchase your ticket online.   If that doesn’t work I will be in school  through Friday May 9 – you can give me $10 and I will VISA your ticket online – and print out the ticket for you.
We are also holding a drawing for free tickets.  Mrs. Schroeder (retired 2011) bought five.  I bought five.  If anybody else you knows would like to donate for this cause we will purchase more than ten tickets to give away on Thursday May 2. In order to win the tickets you must do the following:
  • View the movie trailer here.
  • Read a movie review here.
  • Write an essay (150 word minimum) on why you want to go
  • Send it to Mr. Wood at bobwoodmsu@gmail.com on google docs
  • or bring in a hard copy typed – 12 point font / 1 inch margins
  • All qualifying essays will be placed in a hat – we’ll draw ten winners
  • If you don’t get a free ticket – that still gives you time to buy one.

The catch is if you WIN THE TICKET – you’ve got to go!  So don’t enter if you cannot go to the movie.  We don’t want somebody to take a ticket and then waste it.  To insure that doesn’t happen – you can get your winning ticket from Mrs Bejarano on Wednesday May 8.  We’ll announce the winners this Wednesday May 1.  That gives you a week to set up a ride.  If you cannot go tell Mrs. Bejarano – we will draw again and give the ticket to somebody who can go.

Please – try to see this movie – you will truly be inspired – and awakened to the spirit and courage of some amazing young girls.
