And then we take the Southshore line train into the Windy City ($8.50 one way). It drops us smak dab in the middle of town – directly under Millennium Park. We head up the stairs and scatter. Go where you want. Have a great time. Meet back at the train – the return time will depend on weather and plans. We will confirm return time prior to going – so parents will know times before we leave.

Create your own Close UP / Selma promo flyer
Contact Mr. Wood at bobwoodmsu@gmail.com or (616) 402-8668 if you want to make your own flyer.
An effective way to get the word out to friends and family, teachers, and financial contributors is by creating your own promotional flyer. You make your side of the flyer; Mr. Wood will do the other side. We back-to-back them, in color and send you out into the world to spread the word. Mr. Wood’s side of the flyer (to the right) deals with Close Up the organization, and a history of Oakridge Close Up travels or the Selma, Alabama trip and what that entails. Your side deals with you.
Why do the flyers? – Adults want young people involved in their government, in their world. I think they are willing to support you financially, but they want to know that you aren’t just looking for a handout. By creating a flyer, you are proving your worth. You are putting forth the effort. And that resonates with people. So don’t just hand it to them…know it. Talk it. Feel it. And convince those who you meet you are a worthy investment, and that supporting you financially is a down payment on the future of this nation.

Sunday – Chicago Christmas Trip is Officially Postponed…
I’m so sorry...Me and Mr. Lohman waited and waited and waited for this weather system to move on. It’s not going to happen. There is a Winter Weather Advisory in effect on the drive to Michigan City until noon on Sunday. That’s the middle of our drive to Michigan City…with the new rules and all, we have to be really careful that we follow the weather report if ever want to go again.
Mr. Lohman suggested that we go on Saturday after finals (Saturday January 25)…sounds good to me. Let’s pencil it in. Maybe more folks will be able to go. Maybe we won’t have to mess with all this ice. Please e-mail me if you got this message (bobwoodmsu@gmail.com). And spread the word – we’ll go I promise – just not tomorrow.
So, have a great holiday all. See you next year. Salamou Alaykoum.

Brenda Fassie – (1964 to 2004) “The Madonna of the Townships”
OK guys…you got your wishes. No school today. But…we still have our study of Nelson Mandela to finish up. If you left your timeline assignment at the school on Thursday, you can turn it in on Tuesday when we return. You know what needs to be done – do your work over break and transfer it to the timeline when you return. If you got everything with you – finish it up and turn it in on Monday. Saturday’s assignment is still due posted to Google docs by Saturday 11:59 PM. Since our Mandela link wasn’t working well, I had planned on concentrating our Friday class on Brenda Fassie – and with Nana teaching us the dance steps to her sound – I was going to add the attached music videos. If you get the urge and you would like to get to know a significant (not only South African, but African, and world) pop star – take a look below.
I will contact you today about the Chicago trip – the forecast keeps changing (right now it looks OK) – we just need to keep an eye on the weather. As of Friday morning – Chicago is still on. Email me if you have questions. And I’ll contact you later today. Meanwhile enjoy an inspiring South African voice.
