Nicole Depender Congrats on the 25!

…for re-taking your ACT from 22 to 25.

The ACT will never fully define your educational value.  That being said, in this standardized “brick in a wall” we-have-to-measure-everything-in-the-classroom world, your final score has significance; fortunately not nearly as much as some think.

nicole

I’ve always believed that your ACT score opens doors; seldom does it close them.  You don’t even need the test to get into MCC.   In addition I’ve seen a lot of low ACT scores overcome by high GPA’s to gain university acceptance.  Public universities are looking for more than a test taker, even if public schools seem to think otherwise.  Your attitude, your effort, your intelligence, your extra-curriculars, your GPA trends, volunteering and sports participation and clubs and blogs and an ability to write a compelling essay – are all as significant or more vital in taking the next step, than your standardized ACT final tally.  I would also say that they are a lot more reflective of predicting success at that next level.

ACT News – reading and writing

The key to the effectiveness of your A.C.T! group is your knowledge base.  Some of you are extremely passionate about the issue that you’ve chosen.  That’s not enough.  You cannot hope to be influential in huge-1-8461-jpgmaking change in this world  if you don’t know what you’re talking about.

So, it’s imperative in this initial information search that you look hard for five good news stories.  First you must go to legitimate sources…see the list below.  Secondly, you need to tap into a wide breadth of  issues that cover your topic.  In order to succeed on the first two fronts you’re going to have to dig deeper than  your initial google launch.  Googling inside of news sights and outside on Google takes work.  Be creative in your searches and look hard at the quality of articles you’ve found.  When you land on five as a group…make sure that each of the five brings something substantial to the table.  You will be graded on the quality of the article and legitimacy of the source.  And bank good articles for the next marking period; you’ve got five more coming.

Next is active reading.

ECON – Exam Honor Roll

Congratulations to the following students who earned an “A” on last weeks Economics Common Unknown-3Assessment.  Well done guys…keep accumulating that Human Capitol…and twenty five years from now you’ll have more than just your waitressing tips to pull out of the piggy bank to try and dent the $235,000 cost to send little junior off to Michigan State University for four years, in order that he achieve a degree in some major that will pay him $35,000 a year when he gets out of college…at least you’re covering half the battle.  Now its on to pitchforks and torches and political representatives who do not consider affordable higher education a basic human right in the richest country on the face of the planet in the history of the world.

Don’t be afraid to say what you SEE

Hey guys…

These blogs of yours look GREAT!  The quality of sights coming out of this assignment is very very good.  I’m impressed.  That being said – if you keep pushing it will improve –Unknown-2 your blog and others as well.  To do so, we need to take the evaluation assignment to the next level
..so

1 – Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.  Use the stuff that you see as positive off of other students’ blogs, on your own. Copy it!  That’s what blogs are about.  A number of you have noticed Michael’s Bucket List.  Cool. Get your own bucket list.  That’s what blogs are all about.  Foreign guys – check the way that each of you are laying out your country – if you see an effective format, copy it.  That’s the way these things get better.

2 – Don’t be afraid to be critical of your fellow students.  You’ve made great insights to me into other people’s blogs – positive and negative.  I have a feeling that you will not post the negatives on other people’s blogs – then how do they improve their position?  You don’t have to say HEY YOUR BLOG SUCKS!  but you can say – I think if you did this it might be improved or if you did that I think it would help.  And positives are always welcomed – so mix things up.

That’s the way we all get better together!  And make sure that spelling does not become a problem whether you are German, French, Ghanan, or American.  So far so good.  I did not expect to see so many quality blogs so early in the game…your efforts here are well noted.

Have a nice weekend.
