AFTER SCHOOL STUDY SESSION on Wednesday. We’ll sit down together and listen to “This American Life.” We’ll do the extra credit together. Senior Current Issues and Economics students are invited.

Go to This American Life – “Giant Pool of Money” program. Look under the date 5-09-08 – you’ll see the photograph of a wadded up dollar bill. Under the bill is a list to click on – click on Full Episode. The entire 59:00 show will come up. Listen in. I think you will learn a lot about where this mortgage crisis comes from. You can also learn with the help of commercial mortgages attorneys as they can help you legally in knowing the concept and crisis in detail. The program is interesting and pretty simple to understand. I have created a PDF of terms and ideas that go along with the show. Listen to the podcast with the paper in front of you. Do your best to answer the questions…no more than a sentence or two. The PDF will explain what you need to do.
Turn in the paper to Mr. Wood. So that I am comfortable that it is your work only, I’ll ask you a couple of questions about your answers.
ALL STUDENTS CAN EARN UP TO TWENTY FIVE POINTS EXTRA CREDIT for this assignment. These points will be added onto your blog totals for the marking period.
Listening to “This American Life” is a great way to learn. Give it a shot…I think you’ll like it

OK guys today – use the period to get in your issue groups. For one half of the hour circle up and share within the groups posted on the first line of the Issues Board – Take the top ones. That means you are with all of the people who are doing the same topics as you! Not your group with group leaders – your issue comrades. Bring your articles and your ideas – touch base on the problems that you have encountered and ideas that you have. For the second half of the hour take the second line of issues posted on the Issues Board and do the same.
If you have any good articles post them to the Issues Board, I will have them copied and back to you by Monday.
Get some work done. Share your ideas. And somebody please tell me what exactly John McCain’s plan for Health Care actually is.

Assignment due for Senior Current Issues on Monday October 20
OK guys, lets take a good look at the past three decades in regards to this banking crisis. Check the link to the McClatchy News article. Click on PDF Questions that go with it. Answer the questions. You can work with a friend to help you think through the questions, however in the end and on paper I want “YOUR WORDS” not theirs.
The article will give a good solid overview on the history of this deregulation problem which has morphed into a global financial crisis.

Your responsibility in this assignment will be to know the issues…in particular the issues that you have selected to concentrate upon. In order to do well here you need to read! Americans don’t read enough anymore – they watch 30 second TV commercials and take for gospel anybody talking on a television news program. It will be up to you to sift through all of the spin and come up with a pro-active position on the issues based upon the knowledge of your own research. And then inform your group. Work with other issue captains from other groups to solidify your position. Talk with Mr Wood. Talk with one another. If something doesn’t make sense…ASK ABOUT IT! If a candidate’s position is inconsistent with reality – duh he’s (or she’s) lying – call him (or her) on it. Dig in! Find the facts! State your position and feel confident in your knowledge of this presidential election.
