SCI Issue #1 – Wiki Leaks, Assange, Manning, and Snowden

•  For this study we will begin here with a 2011 Frontline Investigation “WikiSecrets”.   Go here to access Wiki leaks.

liberdade

• Bradley Manning stands at the center of the biggest military intelligence breach in U.S. history — the leaking of more than a half million classified documents on the WikiLeaks website throughout 2010.  Bradley E. Manning, was the Army intelligence analyst who’s charged with handing them over.  Who is Bradley Manning, and what does his story tell us about how and why the secret cache of documents may have been leaked? In WikiSecrets, FRONTLINE correspondent Martin Smith gains exclusive access to those closest to Manning Smith also examines the events surrounding the publication of the leaked documents, interviewing key players like WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange; Assange’s former colleague Daniel Domscheit-Berg; and Adrian Lamo, a well-known figure in the cyber underground who eventually turned Manning over to the authorities and is now living in an undisclosed location over fears for his safety.

Senior Current Issues – topics for study….

For the remainder of the semester I’d like for us to take on  relevant world issues.  We talked a bit about it in class…I’ve settled on a few that I think would be interesting to explore.  What I want us to do is to begin our study in the classroom as a group – with organized audio-visual media (NPR, Frontline, Sixty Minutes) and class discussion in an effort to get a basic understanding of the issue.

After that we’ll move into the computer lab or we’ll use our own personal internet devices, laptop, Ipad, phone, etc, and we will search for corresponding stories (of personal interest) to broaden our knowledge base.  For follow up assignments I will require from you an IOW (Issue of the World).  You will be need to search and find a legitimate news article that spins off of our original study.

bildeCome holiday season…we get caught up in a lot of unnecessary stuff….not all of it, just a lot of it. Thanksgiving reminds us of family, about who is important in our lives, to make sure that they know that, and that we do what we can to help them live a life of contentment. Christmas…I”m not exactly sure what that is anymore. Either way we all have problems that complicate the holidays; stuff that can make this time of the year difficult. Regardless, however tuff, our lives for the most part, work; we can fix things.

To all Oakridge students…I’m concerned that you may be confused about this year’s change in our final semester grade compilation.  It’s vastly different from the past, and you need to be very aware of these changes.

The criteria for Semester grades 2013/14 is as follows:

  • Marking Period 1 – final %
  • Marking Period 2 – final %
  • Making Period 3 – final %
  • Final Exam – final %
  • The four above are averaged to achieve your final grade.
