In this Feb. 20, 2013 file photo, Easton Area School District students Brianna Hawk, 15, left, and Kayla Martinez, 14, display their “I (heart) Boobies!” bracelets for photographers outside the U.S. Courthouse in Philadelphia. The Easton Area School District says it will take its fight against “I (heart) Boobies!” bracelets to the U.S. Supreme Court. The board voted 7-1 Tuesday night, Oct. 29, 2013 to appeal a decision rejecting its claim the bracelets are lewd and should be banned from school. The bracelets are designed to promote breast cancer awareness among young people. Photo: Matt Rourke, AP

SCI Blogs – Personal Information

Hey guys…your blogs are coming along well.  I have a concern; as I was going through all of your stuff, I got to thinking that’s a lot of personal information out there on the web.  What we need to do is scale back the home info….so don’t provide a home address or a home phone on your blog…not now anyhow, not while you are in high school.  I think when you graduate that is fine, necessary actually.   Keep a copy of your personal resume with that information on it, to give to perspective employers.  However, on your blog, and your resume, use your blog address and email address for return information.

You can also use Oakridge High School – 5493 E Hall Road – Muskegon, MI 49442.

There’s creepers out there…don’t be paranoid.  Just be smart.  I think these changes are probably necessary.

SCI Exchange Student Blog Posts

While SCI Oakridge Seniors pursue college scholarships our five foreign exchange students will work on a two fold assignment. images-1

#1 – My Homeland / #2 – My American Experience.

Each of these sites will be required on the blog and will be graded with the same point value assigned to Oakridge senior scholarship searches.  Consequently you will recieve a MP #3 Common Asssessment Exam grade of 100 points on final requirement evaluation.  50 / 50 on the two topics.  And 30 points a week for the posts – 15 per.  The guidelines for each of the two sights are listed below.

#1 – My Homeland – My Homeland or My Homeland (country) is a required page and category.  Each of the following posts need to be linked to a subsequent category on the blog page, so that friends and family can learn about your home country.

  • General Country info.
  • Homecity post – provide photos or slideshow, description on your hometown.
  • Family – place it as a link in your Homeland page, even if it is already on the blog.
  • Friends – let’s hear about them and see them.  Maybe a video or podcast.
  • Something Special – something unique (food, music, sport, something about your country)
  • Country history – our academic link
  • Some kind of media – whether its a slideshow or podcast or movie.

Unknown

#2 – An American Experience – Two posts a week by Sunday night at 11:59 PM.  I don’t care what you post about…it needs to deal with your experience here in the USA.  It can be positive or negative.  It would be nice to include photos or links.  It must be in English…extra credit if you’d like to include your home language.

  • They need to be located on your page list – after “About Me”   ghana flag map
  • My homeland.
  • My American Experience

Blogs Part II – Blog Critiques

  • Assignment is due by Friday, November 1 @ 11:59 PM.
  • Minimum 1000 words.  I want you to do a thorough evaluation.
  • This assignment is worth 100 points.

OK…here we go.  The easy part is done – you’ve got yourself a blog.  That’s good in one sense.  You have a place that you can send a potential employer, where they can learn more about you and hopefully consider your hire based in part on that information.  Or a scholarship committee will look you up and check you out and choose you among scores in competition.  You might use your blog as an added information site while applying for various colleges.  There are all sorts of reasons that this blog of yours can make a positive blog-worlddifference in your life.

Unfortunately a blog that is not up to date, or is incomplete, or very difficult to manage tells a story as well.  A sloppy blog that doesn’t get a regular update indicates problems.  What’s at the end of that link – the layout and the message that you bring to the table is vital.  Which brings us to Blog Assignment Part II.

Blogs Part II – Critiques – Refining my Blog.

I want you to go to the Buddha blog above and look at all of the Senior blogs posted on my sight.  Look around…go through as many as you can; eyeball them.  Look for ideas.  Identify blog strengths that you might be able to copy.   Finally, it would be nice, however not necessary to leave any messages (suggestions and compliments) on the student blogs that you have evaluated, in order to help that individual improve their creation.

The Guidelines for this evaluation:

Move through the blogs looking for strengths until you

  • 1 – Identify the blog by student name.
  • 2 – Strengths
  • Identify each strength that you find in that blog that may be useful for you to use (in a word). Follow that word up with a statement paragraph form on why this is a strength .   Repeat as needed with strengths.  And move on to the next blog…until you fulfill the required word limit.

It is my hope that by thoroughly evaluating others’ blogs that you will come up with ideas that increase the efficiency of your own blog and help others (through comments) to make theirs better as well.  Check the following directions for Google docs posting…

  1. Create a gmail account
  2. Go to Google Drive
  3. Create a document
  4. Rename it –  period 1, SCI, your name and title of the assignment (Blog Critiques).
  5. Share it with Mr. Wood (bobwoodmsu@gmail.com) and allow me to edit
  6. check the box that “sends me a copy” that’s you –  to ensure that the google docs was sent

Podcasts 1.1 & 1.2 – Intro to Economics

In an effort to improve understanding of key terms I’ll be posting MP3 podcasts of “terms to study” regularly Unknown-2throughout the semester.  These terms will serve as a core for unit comprehension and exams.  Each is also listed in the classroom on the front whiteboard and will be targeted for class discussion.  When I place a numeral that corresponds to a particular class hour next to the term on the front board, I will assume that all students in that particular class hour understands the term.  Any student can veto my decision by a simple veto.   We will continue to work through the definition until that student is comfortable with the term.  However, one the class hour numeral is on the board, quizzes will be drawn from the corresponding term.   All quizzes are two terms 10 point essay answers (twenty point total) and are based on a working understanding of the word; that means you’ll be answering in essay format.  I am also posting audio podcasts of many of them below.  Each podcast is two to five minutes in length.

Quizzes will be often and unannounced.  So it is important for you to review your notes and the below podcasts regularly throughout the semester.  Terms will also serve as a basis for Common Assessments.  Consequently a good way to review for the Common Assessments would be to listen to the podcasts.

Terms in blue have been podcasted. Merely go to the term and you will find the podcast in MP3 format.
