Calling Congress 101

If you intend to get involved in holding your governmental officials accountable, then you must to do more than just vote.  You need to read and make yourself aware of issues of the day.  You need to write your elected representatives and let them know that you are watching and listening.  Finally, call them.  Put their numbers in your cell phone, and make it a regular occurrence that when an issue comes up that you really care about – you get on the horn and give your Congressman a call.

There are several things to remember when you call, the most important of which is – any call is a good call.  Don’t be AFRAID.  If you screw up – who cares.  Hang up and try again.  Like anything else the more you do this, the better you’ll get.  So lets pick up the phone – and get a dialing.

ACT Groups and Mission Statements

Our first ACT assignment in Government class is for students to align themselves with friends who have a common goal.  Once you’ve done this you have a couple of tasks.   #1, your  group must come up with a name.   That name should encompass what your group is all about.  You also need an acronym which is the initials that spell out your group name.  Then we need a mission statement.  The mission should answer the question, “Why you exist – or what is your organization’s core focus?

  • Your mission statement should be:
  • Short
  • Memorable
  • Inspiring
  • Market focused – who do you serve?
  • What you want to be remember for…

Finally it should pass the T-shirt test.  Would it fit on a T-shirt?  Would you wear that T-shirt?  Finally, would your staff wear it?
