Decisions, Decisions, Decisions…

For all things college – go to our website – building a better world.net.  Please go here for extra credit assignment in discussing this material with mom and dad.

When you are talking about college and careers and quality of life issues – there’s a lot of things to consider.  In Economics we are deep into a study of the cost of college.  If that doesn’t shake you just a bit, then you’re either sound asleep  or a very very rich high school student; however I see no BMW’s in the Oakridge High School student parking lot.  In Senior Current Issues – we are off on college scholarship searches – we’ve learned there’s a lot of competition  – even with the cool blogs.

Meanwhile,  challenges abound.   You’ve got so many options  – colleges 4 year and 2 year, apprenticeships, military, school costs, choice of major, career direction,  scholarships, grants and loans…it’s a lot to take on.  But oh so necessary.

Hopefully the information below will help you to sort things out

HELP!

Thirty Point Assignment – due Wednesday November 6 11:59 PM.

Guys…don’t be afraid of constructive criticism.  To get it or to give it.

In reading your evaluations – I am continually struck by the fact that you see imperfections in one anothers’ blogs but you are hesitant to announce that to the individual who created that blog.   Don’t be!  One – you need to be comfortable in presenting critiques – “in your own right.”  Part of communication in the workplace and in life is being honest.  So, be honest.   Two – your friends need your advice.  Come on…if these blogs are going to improve then people need to hear what you have to say.  So say it.  If you see something that needs work then say it needs work.

Finally, you can be creatively constructive.  What I mean by that – couch your criticism in constructive conversation.  Don’t be afraid to speak your mind…but don’t YELL – YOUR BLOG SUCKS!

Because of this… another Google Docs collaboration assignment.  This one is thirty points.  This one is due by Wednesday November 6 at 11:59 PM.  Provide three solid criticisms to your fellow students’ blogs – THREE – each is worth ten points.  Send me the copy of the post – be nice, be constructive, be explicit, but be honest.   And provide the reasons that you think that this improvement will upgrade the said blog…and lets see some depth; even if that means suggesting that the blog creator take a look at another person’s work.  Also, make sure to not merely repeat those criticisms that you noted on your previous evaluation.  Who knows: they may be fixed by now.

And then go post it online at the appropriate blog.

If your suggested do not get posted to the blog that they are directed to, you don’t get any credit for the google docs post.   And finally, do not take the suggestions personally – we are all working towards the same goal here.

So, get moving…

Don’t be afraid to say what you SEE

Hey guys…

These blogs of yours look GREAT!  The quality of sights coming out of this assignment is very very good.  I’m impressed.  That being said – if you keep pushing it will improve –Unknown-2 your blog and others as well.  To do so, we need to take the evaluation assignment to the next level
..so

1 – Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.  Use the stuff that you see as positive off of other students’ blogs, on your own. Copy it!  That’s what blogs are about.  A number of you have noticed Michael’s Bucket List.  Cool. Get your own bucket list.  That’s what blogs are all about.  Foreign guys – check the way that each of you are laying out your country – if you see an effective format, copy it.  That’s the way these things get better.

2 – Don’t be afraid to be critical of your fellow students.  You’ve made great insights to me into other people’s blogs – positive and negative.  I have a feeling that you will not post the negatives on other people’s blogs – then how do they improve their position?  You don’t have to say HEY YOUR BLOG SUCKS!  but you can say – I think if you did this it might be improved or if you did that I think it would help.  And positives are always welcomed – so mix things up.

That’s the way we all get better together!  And make sure that spelling does not become a problem whether you are German, French, Ghanan, or American.  So far so good.  I did not expect to see so many quality blogs so early in the game…your efforts here are well noted.

Have a nice weekend.

SCI Blogs – Personal Information

Hey guys…your blogs are coming along well.  I have a concern; as I was going through all of your stuff, I got to thinking that’s a lot of personal information out there on the web.  What we need to do is scale back the home info….so don’t provide a home address or a home phone on your blog…not now anyhow, not while you are in high school.  I think when you graduate that is fine, necessary actually.   Keep a copy of your personal resume with that information on it, to give to perspective employers.  However, on your blog, and your resume, use your blog address and email address for return information.

You can also use Oakridge High School – 5493 E Hall Road – Muskegon, MI 49442.

There’s creepers out there…don’t be paranoid.  Just be smart.  I think these changes are probably necessary.

SCI Exchange Student Blog Posts

While SCI Oakridge Seniors pursue college scholarships our five foreign exchange students will work on a two fold assignment. images-1

#1 – My Homeland / #2 – My American Experience.

Each of these sites will be required on the blog and will be graded with the same point value assigned to Oakridge senior scholarship searches.  Consequently you will recieve a MP #3 Common Asssessment Exam grade of 100 points on final requirement evaluation.  50 / 50 on the two topics.  And 30 points a week for the posts – 15 per.  The guidelines for each of the two sights are listed below.

#1 – My Homeland – My Homeland or My Homeland (country) is a required page and category.  Each of the following posts need to be linked to a subsequent category on the blog page, so that friends and family can learn about your home country.

  • General Country info.
  • Homecity post – provide photos or slideshow, description on your hometown.
  • Family – place it as a link in your Homeland page, even if it is already on the blog.
  • Friends – let’s hear about them and see them.  Maybe a video or podcast.
  • Something Special – something unique (food, music, sport, something about your country)
  • Country history – our academic link
  • Some kind of media – whether its a slideshow or podcast or movie.

Unknown

#2 – An American Experience – Two posts a week by Sunday night at 11:59 PM.  I don’t care what you post about…it needs to deal with your experience here in the USA.  It can be positive or negative.  It would be nice to include photos or links.  It must be in English…extra credit if you’d like to include your home language.

  • They need to be located on your page list – after “About Me”   ghana flag map
  • My homeland.
  • My American Experience
